IBO 2022 was the last online IBO, held remotely due to lingering COVID restrictions. All practical stations were adapted for remote delivery.

No Merit category was awarded in 2022. The medal rate was 55.3% (131 out of 237), with 106 competitors receiving no award.

What it actually took to medal in 2022
Only 1 in 9 competitors (11.0%) won Gold. The scoring system used normalized Z-total scores with a 50-point base, giving the final scores a mean near 50.

The Gold range spanned 18.11 points (74.28 to 92.39), the widest of any medal tier. By contrast, the Silver band was only 10.74 points wide. The top Gold medalists separated themselves decisively from the rest of the field.

How hard was each station, really?
Average points earned vs. each lab's 100-point maximum
At just 29.4% average attainment, Zoology was the hardest practical station in any year of our 2022-2024 analysis. Over 70% of the points in this station went uncollected. Even Gold medalists averaged well below half marks.
Biochemistry at 37.2% continues its pattern as one of the hardest stations across all years. The only station to score lower was Zoology in this same competition.

The online format produced a notably different leaderboard than in-person years. Iran achieved a 4-Gold sweep (ranked 7th-18th), a result they have not replicated in-person since. The Independent Olympiad Delegation also swept Gold, led by the competition's overall winner.

India's 1-Gold team built their edge almost entirely on theory. The Netherlands showed the most extreme reverse pattern: their team dramatically outperformed in practicals relative to their theory scores.

4 things the official result does not say out loud
The Zoology station's 29.4% average attainment is the lowest for any practical station across our entire 2022-2024 dataset. Even the median competitor captured less than a third of the available points.
IBO 2022 was conducted online. The practical stations were adapted for remote delivery, which likely changed the skill mix required. Some traditionally strong in-person teams underperformed, while teams with strong computational skills found the format more natural.
Theory-practical correlation was 0.77, the second-lowest in our 3-year window (2024 was 0.71). The online format may have made the practical component test a somewhat different skill set than theory.
Unlike 2023 and 2024, IBO 2022 did not award Merit certificates. The cut was binary: you either medaled (Bronze or above) or received nothing. This made the Bronze cutoff (46.04) effectively the pass/fail line.

What the data says to train next
Animal-focused practicals need real bench time
Zoology at 29.4% was devastating for most competitors. Dissection skills, specimen identification, and morphological analysis under time pressure cannot be learned from textbooks alone.
Biochemistry remains the bottleneck
At 37.2%, Biochemistry was the second-hardest station. This is a consistent pattern: Biochemistry ranks among the hardest stations in every year. Invest disproportionate training time here.
Theory is your floor, not your ceiling
Theory A and B both averaged ~73% attainment, meaning the theory exam was relatively accessible. To medal, you needed to perform well on theory AND find points in the more difficult practicals.
