🌿Ecology Ecology is one of the high weighted less effort requiring and most conceptually interconnected sections of the Olympiads. Questions routinely require you to read and interpret graphs, apply mathematical models, and synthesise across levels of organisation — from individuals to the biosphere. This guide is structured around those three demands.

Ecosystems: Energy flow, trophic levels, nutrient cycles, and primary productivity.
Biosphere & Human Impact: Climate change, pollution, conservation biology, and sustainability.

What does olympiad Ecology test?

Ecology is the scientific study of interactions between organisms and their environment. In ecology, questions span three distinct but overlapping skill levels:

  1. Factual recall — Although all olympiad problems are supposed to be non-extreme-knowledge dependent, ecology is a major part of the area which is indeed required to be memorised to a relatively bigger extent. Definitions, named processes, classic experiments (e.g. Gause’s competitive exclusion, Connell’s barnacle experiments)
  2. Quantitative reasoning — population growth equations, energy transfer calculations, diversity indices, graph interpretation
  3. Synthesis — linking mechanisms across levels (e.g. how eutrophication drives succession, or how island biogeography predicts conservation reserve design)
