How this section is organized

Ethology is the most example-driven section in this guide — nearly every concept here was established through a specific, named study (Tinbergen’s stickleback and gull work, Lorenz’s imprinting geese, Skinner’s operant conditioning boxes, von Frisch’s waggle dance decoding), and exam questions consistently test the ability to apply a concept to a named species scenario rather than recite a definition. Expect frequent case studies throughout every page, not just in one dedicated section, and <!-- VIDEO: ... --> markers at points where a described behavior is dynamic enough that a future video clip would teach it better than a static diagram.

The section runs in four tiers:

  • Foundations of Behavior (2 pages) — why behavior happens (proximate mechanism vs. ultimate/evolutionary cause) and how it’s acquired (innate vs. learned, and the specific learning types tested).
  • Communication & Orientation (2 pages) — how behavior is expressed outward: signaling between individuals, and movement through space.
  • Behavioral Ecology (3 pages) — the evolutionary-strategy core of the subject: foraging, mating systems, and kin-directed altruism, each analyzed in cost/benefit terms.
  • Social Structure & Rhythms (2 pages) — how individuals organize into groups, and how behavior is timed against internal and environmental clocks.

Start with Mechanisms of Behavior — it introduces the proximate/ultimate distinction (Tinbergen’s four questions) that every later page assumes when explaining why a behavior exists.
