What it actually took to medal in 2023
Roughly 1 in 10 competitors (9.9%) won Gold. The medal rate (~52.6%) was significantly lower than IBO 2024's 84.2%, making 2023 a more selective year by that metric.

The Gold cutoff (123.12) sat 0.39 points above the best Silver (122.73). Even tighter than 2024's 0.53-point gap. One extra correct True/False statement on theory would have made the difference.

How hard was each station, really?
Biochemistry had the lowest attainment rate at 45.8%, nearly 20 points below the easiest station (Plant Molecular Biology at 64.1%). Biochemistry is consistently one of the hardest IBO practicals across years.
Theory Paper 2 (mean 184.8/230, 80.4% attainment) was substantially more accessible than Theory Paper 1 (mean 107.2/166, 64.6% attainment). The difference in difficulty between the two theory papers was larger than any practical station gap.

Singapore and India both achieved perfect 4-Gold sweeps. Singapore's team average (132.3) was the highest of any delegation. India's 4-Gold haul at IBO 2023 was a historic result for the team.

Iran's 2-Gold team built their edge almost entirely on the theory exam, with the largest positive gap of any Gold-winning delegation. Kazakhstan, as the host nation, showed the opposite pattern: stronger in labs than on paper.
Curiosities
3 things the official result does not say out loud
Theory and practical scores correlated at r = 0.84, the highest of any year in our 2022-2024 window. Competitors who tested well on paper almost always performed well in the lab. Being lopsided was the exception, not the rule.
Theory Paper 2 averaged 80.4% attainment vs. 64.6% for Paper 1. The 16-point gap is the largest theory-paper difficulty split in our dataset. If a competitor bombed Paper 1, Paper 2 was their lifeline.
Biochemistry was the hardest practical station at 45.8% attainment, nearly 20 points below the easiest station. This pattern repeats across all three years we analyzed: Biochemistry consistently punishes the field.

Theory and practicals move together
With r = 0.84, the 2023 data shows that broad competence matters. Pure theory grinders or pure lab rats rarely reached Gold. Build both.
Biochemistry is your ceiling
At 45.8% average attainment, Biochemistry is where most competitors left the most points on the table. Enzyme kinetics, assay interpretation, and wet-lab precision under time pressure are the highest-leverage training targets.
Master Plant Molecular Biology
PMB was the "easiest" station (64.1%), but that also means every Gold medalist scored well on it. If you cannot hold your own on the accessible stations, you cannot compensate elsewhere.
