Only 1 in 7 competitors (15.3%) walked away with Gold. The 84.2% medal rate was generous by IBO standards, but the gaps between tiers were razor-thin.

The Gold cutoff (130.07) sat just 0.53 points above the best Silver score (129.54). The Silver-Bronze gap was similarly tight at 0.54 points. At this level, a single extra mark on one practical station would have changed medal colors.

How hard was each station, really?
Average points earned vs. each lab's own maximum
Bioinformatics had the lowest attainment rate of any station: competitors captured just 44.5% of its 100 available points. The station also had the second-highest correlation with final rank (r = 0.70).
Theory total (Papers A + B combined) correlated at r = 0.94 with final score, making it by far the single strongest predictor. Theory A averaged 63.1% attainment, Theory B averaged 61.3%.

China, the United States, and Chinese Taipei are the only delegations where all 4 members won Gold. Vietnam came closest to joining them: 3 Gold and 1 Silver, with their Silver medalist finishing 17th overall.

Vietnam and China topped the overall medal table, and both built their edge disproportionately on the theory exam. Saudi Arabia and the Philippines showed the reverse: their teams outperformed their theory scores in the lab, suggesting strong practical training programs despite lower theory throughput.
Curiosities
4 things the official result does not say out loud
Theory total correlated at 0.94 with final score. No single practical station came close (the highest was Molecular Biology at 0.71). If you had to predict someone's final rank from one number, their combined theory score would be right 94% of the way there.
The gap between the last Gold and the first Silver was 0.53 points. In a 165-point competition, that is 0.3% of the winner's score. A single extra True/False statement on either theory paper would have flipped the result.
With 67.7% average attainment, Biochemistry was the most accessible practical station by a wide margin. Bioinformatics (44.5%) was the hardest. The 23-percentage-point gap between the easiest and hardest station is one of the largest in recent IBO history.
China's #2 finisher (overall rank 2, final score 160.11) had the single largest theory-over-practical gap of any competitor. His theory T-score was 2.10 standard deviations above his own practical average, yet he still finished second overall. Pure theory dominance at the very top of the field.

Theory decides more than any single lab
Theory alone correlates r = 0.94 with final score. Master your written exam first. Every other component trails behind.
Bioinformatics was the differentiator
At 44.5% average attainment, most competitors struggled with the Bioinformatics station. Spending targeted time on sequence analysis, phylogenetic tools, and computational biology gives you the most room to gain points where others lose them.
Just short of a medal? Here is the fix
Merit to Bronze: The gap was just 0.30 points. A steadier finish across all four labs, not one breakthrough topic, is usually what closes that gap.
Bronze to Silver: 0.54 points. Hunt for lost partial-credit marks on the theory paper before you hunt for new topics.
