Tight at the top

The Gold cutoff (75.73) sat just 0.32 points above the best Silver score (75.41). Silver-Bronze was slightly wider at 0.50 points. The Bronze band itself was the widest tier, spanning over 20 points from 38.56 to 59.03.

Hardest to score on

Molecular Biology had the lowest attainment rate at just 52%: competitors scored barely half the available points despite having the widest raw-score range (0 to 100). It was also the most variable station, with scores ranging from 3 to 100.

Theory still dominates

Theory correlated at r = 0.96 with the composite final score. Theory Paper A averaged 71% attainment (33.0 / 46.4 max), Theory Paper B averaged 72% (32.4 / 44.8 max). Both papers were more accessible than any practical station.

Four-way Gold sweep

For the first time in recent IBO history, four delegations placed all 4 members in Gold: China, the United States, Chinese Taipei, and South Korea. China led with an average score of 91.1, nearly 5 points clear of the next team. South Korea's full-team Gold sweep is a notable rise from 2025 (where they placed 1G 2S 1B).

The United States built their 4-Gold sweep on theory strength, finishing +0.79 standard deviations better on theory than on practical. Luxembourg showed the most extreme practical advantage at -1.16: their team outperformed their theory baseline dramatically in the lab. India, despite earning 1G 3S, showed a large practical lean (-0.87), suggesting their lab training is substantially stronger than their theory preparation.

Curiosities

4 things the official result does not say out loud

01
4 Gold sweeps

China, the United States, Chinese Taipei, and South Korea each put all 4 team members in Gold. That is the most simultaneous Gold sweeps in recent IBO history. The "big four" combined for 16 of the 33 Gold medals (48.5%).

02
52% on Molecular Biology

The Molecular Biology practical was the hardest station competitors faced in 2026: the field captured barely half the 100 available points. Scores ranged from 3 to 100, one of the widest spreads of any IBO station in recent years. The top 33 Gold medalists averaged 77.7 on this station versus the field average of 51.9.

03
Plant Comparative Biology: r = 0.889

Among the four practical stations, Plant Comparative Biology had the strongest correlation with final rank (r = 0.889). It was also the station with the smallest maximum score (58 points), yet it was the best single-station predictor of overall performance. Students who excelled here tended to excel everywhere.

04
The largest IBO since 2019

With 302 competitors from 78 countries, IBO 2026 was the largest edition since pre-pandemic times. The field was 4 competitors larger than 2025 (298) and nearly 50% larger than the 2024 edition (203). The growing field did not dilute medal quality: the Gold cutoff was still tightly contested at 75.73.

What the data says to train next

1

Theory decides the podium

Theory correlated r = 0.96 with final score. Master your written exam first. Theory papers averaged 71-72% attainment, making them the most accessible component, but the range between best and worst was what separated medal tiers.

2

Molecular Biology was the differentiator

At 52% average attainment, most competitors struggled badly with the Molecular Biology practical. Spending targeted time on gel electrophoresis, PCR technique, cloning protocols, and molecular lab skills gives you the most room to gain where others lose.

3

Plant Biology is the stealth predictor

Plant Comparative Biology had the strongest single-station correlation (r = 0.889) with final rank. Botany, plant anatomy, and comparative morphology are often neglected in favor of molecular or animal biology, yet they predicted success better than any other station in 2026.

4

No easy stations to coast on

The highest station attainment was just 60% (Plant Comp. Biology). Every station was hard. Build competence across all four rather than banking on one strength. In 2026, nobody medaled by acing a single station alone.
