Q8 - Temperature and Metabolism Set Oxygen Levels in a Seagrass Meristem

Theoretical B Real exam question - full text reproduced under IBO's CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 license

Seagrass grows rapidly from a meristem at its base. However, weak growth and death of entire seagrass meadows, have become common in recent years. The oxygen partial pressure along the diameter of a seagrass stem was recorded at different seawater temperatures and oxygen saturations. Atmospheric Po is usually = 160 mmHg. 2

Using the information and data, determine which of the statements are true or which are false.

A. Rising seawater temperatures could explain the loss of seagrass meadows.
B. These experiments were performed in the dark.
C. The meristem has a faster metabolic rate than surrounding tissue.
D. o o There is more CO in the meristem at 30 C, than at 5 C. 2
E. The meristem will receive more oxygen in rough ocean conditions than calm ocean conditions.
