Mutations have different effects ranging from strongly deleterious to highly adaptive. The frequency with which a particular mutation appears de novo is described by the fundamental property of each species — distribution of fitness effects (DFE). There are two direct methods of finding DFE: induce mutations and check the fitness of each mutation, or prepare mutation accumulation lines and compare their fitness distribution with the initial line. DFE can also be inferred indirectly from sequencing data that compares rates of non-synonymous (N) and synonymous (S) substitutions using the dN/dS ratio between different species.
